IdentityCHANDON CHINA

Back in 2009, we began searching for a site in China, believing it to have enormous potential in production and consumption of top-quality sparkling wines. CHANDON China arrived on the scene in 2013, in Ningxia, the country’s top premium winemaking region. Nestling at the foot of Helan Mountain, This spectacular place, on the edge of a pristine wilderness presided over by rocky peaks, is one of the country’s largest viticultural areas, now recognized domestically and internationally for the caliber of its wine.
What thrilled us about this place wasn’t just the view. It is a pure, wild and free land. On this site, we are writing winemaking history.
We have called Ningxia home since 2013.
Both Su Long, the Estate Director, and I are masters graduates of the Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University, the top university in China for viticulture and oenology. I joined CHANDON in 2012 with extensive prior experience as a winemaker, a passion for sparkling wine and a knowledge of what the Chinese market wanted.
The way wine is drunk in China is a little different from the way it’s drunk elsewhere. It’s very much about sharing with friends, or business transactions, as a sign of trust. We call it bottoms-up.
This is why we make a red sparkling called XI. The color red has positive associations in Chinese culture and this wine has been a great success for its drinkability, versatility and festive feel.

CHANDON Brut represents our quest for excellence. It has a delicate golden color and fine bubbles. Attractive floral and fresh citrus aromas, tropical fruits, honey and toast. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir it is the crown of our portfolio.  95 points and a gold medal @ 2024 Decanter World wine awards.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT OUR TABLE

Our winery is the most modern state-of-the-art facility you could hope for in which to make a fundamentally traditional product. The design is contemporary with traditional materials, reflecting the fusion of what we make. There are deconstructed Chinese patterns and touches of the red that is so auspicious in Chinese culture. The natural setting, with its backdrop of bare mountains, is exceptional. The winery is surrounded by lush vineyards; we also have some land that we are not using for vines at present; this we use to grow fruit and vegetables for use in-house. CHANDON China is a long way from the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and oenotourism is in its infancy in China. A few years ago even a Chinese person might have struggled to locate Ningxia on a map, but that is rapidly changing. The quality we produce is opening us up to the world. In time, this region may become the Chinese Napa; and, as ever, we are proud to have been pioneers.

TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FUTURE

At CHANDON China as at all our estates, we take our approach to sustainability, responsible farming and the people we rely on very seriously. The estate illustrates the way we use best practice and technology in our vineyards to work towards the goal of sustainability. First Chinese sparkling winery to be certified in Organic viticulture in 2024, it was born in an era of environmental consciousness. From the beginning, we adopted international water-conservation standards and a precise drip-irrigation system. We consider it our duty and honor to be at the vanguard of sustainable practices to protect our soils, the diverse eco systems that surround our estates.
