The storied Roman house celebrated 100 years of fashion and exquisite savoir-faire in Milan with a show orchestrated by Silvia Venturini Fendi, bringing together women’s and men’s silhouettes.
The artistic director and granddaughter of founders Edoardo Fendi and Adele Casagrande Fendi drew inspiration from her personal memories – real or imagined – reaching beyond the archives to bridge past and future.
In a décor evoking the historic salons of the Fendi boutique on Via Borgognona in Rome where the five Fendi sisters – Alda, Anna, Carla, Franca and Paola – worked, the collection radiates with the spirit of Fendi-ness. Touches of humor mingle with sobriety, and sensuality is instilled with a Roman rigor. Sartorial traditions are intertwined with subversive takes on Italian sophistication. The opening silhouette set the tone with a flared high-collar coat is worn as a dress, the waist cinched with a fine gold belt. Techniques once reserved to furs are applied to shearling. Silhouettes continue to evoke the hourglass, a symbol of infinity, in satin skirts, flounced jackets and rounded sleeves. Ribbed knit dresses dissolve into curled lettuce hems, and leather patchworks flare in A-line chevron skirts.
A crescendo of colors evokes the shades of Rome at dusk, from forest green and petrol blue to the blazing hues of sunsets in terracotta and rose. The prowess of Fendi tailoring soars in bracelet-sleeve blazers and stovepipe flares; boiled wool coats are deconstructed with a prominent satin revers.
Accessories connect with signature pieces from the House, born in 1925 as a purveyor of fine stoles and handbags. Shearling stoles are majestically layered over lingerie dresses and tailored collars. Superb leather workmanship triumphs in reversible Selleria coats and emblematic bags, with new iterations of the Spy Bag, Peekaboo and Baguette, elevated with precious ornamentation. The new Fendi Giano and Fendi Lui bags debut as future icons. Games of matte and gloss continue to play out with crystal embroideries, from shoulders to feet and jewelry designed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi, shimmering with fur-like textures on chain collars or resplendent gold earrings. In a nod to the radiant future of the House, the jewelry designer’s twin sons opened the doors to begin this new chapter in its history, an image that evokes the powerful Fendi ethos of passing on savoir-faire over generations.
